Eleven Deben swimmers represented the club across three days at the East Region Championships (Saturday 4th – Monday 6th May). A total of 39 races were completed and 11 finals completed.
We threw down the gauntlet during the first session, with almost all of our swims achieving personal best times, Ella was first to represent the team in the pool with 200m butterfly, and smashed her long course PB (2:43.57) taking out an incredible 3 seconds from her previous time. Ella placed 8th in the heats and had secured Deben’s first final of the weekend. Matthew, Aidan & Will then plunged into the pool for 50m backstroke. All three finished their heats with improved times on their previous personal bests. Will qualified for the final in 2nd position with an impressive time of 28.84, placing him within British national qualifying (top 24 in the country).Boys 100m butterfly swimmers continued the PB trend with some very strong performances: Connor 1:05.68 (1s PB), Will 1:06.27 (2s PB) and Max 1:01.63 (4.5s PB). Max just narrowly missed out on a place in the final. Session 2 saw the arrival of two swimmers from Club Performance to join the team, Elinor and Sarah, this session proved a bit more of a struggle for all of the swimmers. Connor swam a very well-paced 400m IM gaining himself a 2 second PB (5:23.57).
Finals of day 1 had a great atmosphere. Deben had four finalists on Saturday afternoon, Ella (200m butterfly), Harvey (100m breaststroke), Lily (200m breaststroke) & Will (50m backstroke). All performed valiantly under the pressure of regional finals. Lily managed to beat her heat time on 200m breaststroke and Will took away a bronze medal for his 50m backstroke.
Sunday morning started very similarly to day 1, but this time it was Max that completed 200m butterfly and destroyed his PB by a staggering 6 seconds (2:21.35). Both Max and Connor secured themselves a place in the final. Other notable swims from the first session, both achieving small PBs were Nicole’s 50m backstroke, and Lily’s 100m butterfly. The backstroke boys (Matthew, Aidan & Will) then started the second session of the day with 200m backstroke. Will storming his heat with another fantastic swim (2:16.90) with a 2 second PB and another 2nd place qualifier for the final. Harvey narrowly missed his PB in 50m breaststroke but didn’t disappoint, also qualified for the final. The second session was finished by Ella who continued her successful weekend with a 1 second PB in 400m IM (5:38.55)
Five Deben finalist attended Sunday afternoon; Connor (200m butterfly), Harvey (50m breaststroke), Lily (100m butterfly), Max (200m butterfly) & Will (200m backstroke). Both Lily and Max powered through and beat their PB they had achieved only a couple of hours ago by another 1 second.
Monday afternoon proved to be a difficult task for the swimmers following 2 days of high intensity racing. The fatigue was starting to show. However the team weren’t quite finished, Connor (200m free), Max (50m butterfly), Lily (50m butterfly) & Will (100m backstroke) all knocked out marginal PBs, some of which were from Norwich Easter meet a couple of weeks before.
Deben finished the first weekend of regionals with another 2 finalists; Lily (200m IM) & Will (100m backstroke). Both achieved a small improvement to their times, which is quite an achievement considering the number of swims they had completed over the entire weekend.
Huge congratulations to all of the swimmers who competed this year: Aidan, Connor, Ella, Harvey, Lily, Matthew, Max, Nicole, Will, Elinor & Sarah. Overall results included 22 long course PBs, 11 finalists & 1 bronze medal. A big thank you to Kevin and Kieran for their attendance and assistance throughout the weekend.
