Squads

Club Squad

This squad is for those swimmers who have reached their potential and where swimming once per week is sufficient for their fitness needs. Swimmers can still progress to the Junior Squad and beyond if sufficient commitment and swim skills are demonstrated. Swimmers will continue to improve stroke technique and will be encouraged, but not required as part of the squad criteria, to take part in the Junior meets and leagues.

Junior Squad

Swimmers will learn how to work out turn-around times using the pace clock, lane etiquette together with all turns including Individual Medley. Stroke technique will be emphasized and drills will be introduced to achieve maximum distance per stroke. The competitive start award will also potentially be achieved. This squad will take part in the Junior meets and leagues, L3 open meets that they qualify for and time trials. They will also be encouraged to achieve Suffolk Development qualifying times.

Skill Development Squad
This squad will concentrate on the competitive strokes and adapting them to the swimmer. More emphasis will be put on the importance of the turns, starts and finishes. The majority of the training will be focused around Individual Medleys giving the swimmers a chance to excel at all strokes. The competitive start award will be achieved. This squad will compete in League Competitions, Open Meets that they qualify for and time trials. They will also be encouraged to achieve Suffolk Development qualifying times as well as Suffolk County qualifying times.

Competitive Development Squad
Although stroke work will feature strongly in this squad a lot more emphasis will be put on the training zones. Swimmers will typically be 12 to 15 years old and will be learning new drills, increasing their distances and this is where the intensity and pace work will start to make a difference. This squad will take part in time trials, compete in League Competitions, Club Galas and Open Meets that they qualify. They will also be encouraged to achieve Suffolk Development qualifying times as well as Suffolk County qualifying times.

Youth Performance Squad
This squad is for the older swimmer, typically 15 years+. On entering the Youth squad the swimmer will decide whether they wish to train to be selected for league or Open Meets or whether they wish to train for fitness without the pressure of the competitive side. They will be motivated and encouraged to achieve and be the best they can be and will be entering meets that are relevant to their goals. County and Regional qualifying times will still be aspired to within this squad but not a requirement and they will also be expected to be role models for the younger swimmers.

Age Group Development Squad
The squad will consist of the younger aged swimmers, typically 8-12 years old.  This squad will be expected to perform at a high level and have an excellent attendance rate. They will start to learn how to train, pace and compete in all strokes and all distances. Their training programme will be progressive and it’s therefore essential for their development that they have high attendance. They will compete in League Competitions, Open meets they qualify for, Club Galas, and will be aiming at achieving a number of County Times.

Age Group Performance Squad
This squad is replicated above with the only difference being their ability and age, typically 11 to 15 years old. The training will reflect this and they will be expected to perform to the highest of standards at every session.  This squad will also be learning to take responsibility for their own training and learning how to manage effectively their training time etc. They will compete in League Competitions, Open meets, Club Galas and will be aiming at achieving a full set of County Times as well as aiming at achieving Regional Times.  Land Training is now available to this Squad (6.00-7pm) every Monday and attendance is expected.

Performance
This squad is for those swimmers selected by the Head Coach to attend. This will be the most challenging squad in terms of performance and achievement. Swimmers will be completely focused on their swimming progress and will be expected to not only perform but achieve as well. As role models for the rest of the club the swimmers will have a lot of pressure on them to set the standards in what a training session should look like. They will also be encouraged to get involved with the younger swimmers bringing the club together as one. A large number of County Times is a given and expectations will be to achieve Regional times and aim at achieving National Times. Land Training is now available to this Squad (6.00-7pm) every Monday and attendance is expected.

Notes

The AGD, AGP and Performance squads are expected to arrive 15mins early for land warm up before starting their swim session. It is the swimmers responsibility to undertake this warm up correctly and should follow the same routine as used for land training warm up.

Movement from squad to squad will be at the Head Coach’s discretion. It is important to understand that the criteria is set for a reason and any swimmer unable to fulfill it will be moved into another squad until such a time they are able to achieve the entry level again.

THE STRUCTURE WILL ALWAYS ENCOMPASS OUR BELIEFS THAT WE CAN CATER FOR EVERYONE`S NEEDS AND ALL SWIMMERS ARE GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO SWIM.
