This year Deben entered a strong field of 41 swimmers, swimming 293 individual events over 5 days of hard racing.

Overall Deben finished a solid 4th place, briefly going 3rd on 16/3/14, ahead of St Felix which caused a great deal of excitement in the Deben run control room! This is a great result for the team. In the end the top 5 team points were: Ipswich 2752, West Suffolk 1961, St Felix 892, Deben 814.5, Stowmarket 540.5.

The top 12 placing in each age group received a rather attractive trophy this year. This really was a step up from anything given out in previous years and better represents the achievement and hard work required not only to gain County times in the first place but to finish in the top 12 at the end of the event. Our swimmers placed in the top 12 were as follows;

Age 9: Female: Ella Houston – 1st and COUNTY CHAMPION!

Laura Snelham – 8th

Male: Connor Houston – 5th

Age 10: Female: Alexa Eliff – 5th

Minnie Wayman – 6th

Male: Jenson Hoole – 4th

Sam Cundy – 11th

Age 12: Female: Els Cogdell – 8th

Male: Lewis Moore – 2nd

Age 13: Female: Abbie Webb – 5th

Meg Claydon – 12th

Male: Tom Beagley – 4th

Harry Longbottom – 5th

Age 14: Female: Hannah Moore – 9th

Male: Rob Doig – 4th

Kieran Smith – 11th

Last of all were the relays to round of the County events. Out came the war paint, the horns and up turned the volume – all great stuff for a fantastic atmosphere! There were some super close race finishes and Deben really pulled out all the stops to do their best. Overall we finished 3rd which again is just a brilliant result. Team relay points for the top 5 were: Ipswich 123, West Suffolk 105, Deben 72, St Felix 66, Stowmarket 47.

Awards were given for the top 3 teams in each relay event where Deben won three 2nd places and three 3rd places. Fantastic results all round, no DQ’s and a great way to finish the Championships on a high.

The Counties this year saw many swimmers achieve either their first Regional times or improving upon those Regional times they already had;

In the over 15 year old Youth category we now have a total of 8 swimmers who have qualified for the Youth Regional’s on 3/4th May – up from 6 in 2013. These are Sam Allen(16), Sean Burgess(18), Robert Doig(15), Nicholas Elmer(16), Todd Last(16), Caitlin Russell(16), Fran Souter(15) and Kieran Whight(17).

In the 14 and under age group we now have 7 swimmers who have qualified for the Bagcat Regionals to be held on June 7/8/14/15th. Given that the Bagcat Regional swimmers have a last chance meet on May 9/10/11th this is a great result so far and I’m sure we will see further swimmers achieve their first Regional times later this year. The swimmers qualified so far are Tom Beagley(13), Alexa Eliff(10), Harry Longbottom(13), Lewis Moore(12), Hannah Moore(14), Minnie Wayman(10) and Abigail Webb(13).

In summary, the key results from this year’s Suffolk County Champs were as follows:

* Deben overall team placing 4th

* Deben relay team placed 3rd overall.

* One age group County Champion (Ella Houston age 9)

* One double event County Champion (Caitlin Russell (16) for 50BRS and 100BRS)

* 8 Youth Regional qualifiers

* 7 Bagcat Regional qualifiers to date.

Of course, none of these events are possible without the support of the coaches (Richard, Matt, Karen, Ali, Dawn and Elaine) who I extend a HUGE thank you for their support. Also a HUGE thank you to our officials who also helped out poolside (Jeanette, Alison, Kaye, Podge and Mick). Yet another HUGE thank you goes to the parents who helped out on the door and to all the parents for supporting and cheering loudly.

A very special mention and MASSIVE thank you should also go to Sarah Elmer who was the promoter of the event this year. The huge amount of hard work she has put into making the event possible was truly amazing and is a great Ambassador for the Deben club. Thank you Sarah.

In ending this report I’d like to add a personal and special thank you to all the swimmers who have supported me in my new role as Head Coach, for training so hard leading up to this competition and for representing Deben Swimming Club so well. I am very proud of your results and so should you be.

I have been absolutely amazed by the number of PB’s achieved across ALL ages (>70% overall during the first full weekend and >80% overall during the second full weekend) and chuffed to bits to see so many happy faces before AND after their swims. For the club to have gone through all the changes it has in the last 4-6 months, some of which are obvious and some not, and to still be where we are is just incredible and something we should be proud and something we can all build on together.

I believe these are good times the club is currently going through – long may they continue and let’s enjoy the success. Thank you and well done. (Photos of the event are in the Gallery Section of the website)

Best Wishes,

Steve Moore

Head Coach
