Summer League Round 1
Saturday 21st of April was the first of this year’s summer league competitions, and Deben fielded teams to opposite ends of the county – with the A team in Great Yarmouth and the Bs in Sudbury.
In Yarmouth we faced what is best described as mixed competition in what turned out to be a very exciting evening’s swimming, with Deben swimmers getting 15 PBs and no DQs. Cerys Russell and Jack Brammar opened proceedings with impressive 100IM performances and Cerys got a great PB, but Yarmouth and Lowestoft were both strong and held us at bay until the Toms – Brierly and Beagley punched through to take impressive wins in the 50m Back and 50m Breaststroke, followed by a great 50m Free by Issy Wickens who took 1st with a 1.8s PB. The rest of the first half saw three more individual 1st places for Lewis, Abby and Kieran Smith, with most of the other results in the top three. Harry took nearly three seconds off his 50 Free, while Daniel Harris and Hannah Moore produced PBs for their 50 Free and 50 Fly.
The relays were as exciting as ever, and the junior boys (two Toms, Lewis and Daniel) gave us a taste of what was to come with an impressive 1st in the 4×50 Free, despite Lewis suffering a goggle malfunction.
After the brief break we continued to put up a strong fight against Yarmouth and Lowestoft, with great swims and great PBs from Daniel Harris taking over 4s off his 50m Back, Kieran Smith for his 50 Breaststroke and Kieran Harris for his 100 Free. Again most results were in the top three but we only managed a handful of wins. But don’t forget those junior boys, who in the words of the Assistant Coach “mullered the competition” in the 4x50m Medley, finishing over 25m ahead of the 2nd place team! We didn’t disappoint in the Cannon either, although that was a much more closely fought race.
So with 9 individual wins, including Jokers on Tom Beagley and Zara Taylor, three relay wins and the majority of swims placed in the top three, overall on the night we came away with 183 points, behind Lowestoft on 205 and Yarmouth on 225. The highlight of the evening was the fantastic team spirit and support from the Deben swimmers, who all put their hearts into their racing with great enthusiasm.
In Sudbury the team wasn’t quite at full strength, but the swimmers still put on some great performances, and for many it was their first competitive outing for the club. Daniel Mitchell achieved significant PBs in the 100IM and 100 Fly, taking a good 4s off both times with a 1st in the Fly. James Hyde set his sister a challenge by taking nearly 2s off his 50 Breast, and in the following race she delivered, taking over 2s off her 50 Free. Then Aiden Souter took a massive 9s off his PB for 50 Breast.
The second half saw a valiant swim from Daniel Davies, coming second in his 50 Free with nearly a 3s PB, and blazing a trail for Ryan Eagles who took first in his 50 Fly. But it was Daniel Davies who pulled out all the stops for his 50 Fly taking almost 10s off his PB as he came in second again.
So with a handful of 1st and 2nd places (three of which were for Fly) and the majority in the top 4 with only one DQ, the team gave a good account of themselves.
