Winter League Round 1 Report
A big well done for the sterling efforts of the 20 Deben swimmers who took place in the Winter League at Newmarket on the 28th of October.
The team – with ages ranging from nine to 26 – produced eight first places, and a further 13 personal bests in the 44 races at the pool.
Despite an announcement that Deben came in fourth at the end of the night, a re-count later revealed they were actually placed third.
Congratulations to Connie, who PB’d in every race, and who also stormed home first in her 200 IM. More fantastic swims came from Connor (100 Fly), Lily (200 Free), Tara (100 Free), Will (100 Back), Megan (100 Fly) and Elliot (100 Fly). It culminated in a nail-biting U13 Free relay with Ella, Helena, Connor and Will swimming in a very close finish.
On the back of that were nine second places, many of which were breathtakingly close, and 11 thirds.
So what was the view of the head coach? Kieran said:
Both the Winter and Summer Leagues create a brilliant atmosphere, and again the swimmers rose to the challenge.
It was great to see the Under 13 relay; it was such a tight race, and it was one of the highlights of the evening.
Also well done to Connie in her 200 IM – she was the first to secure a win for the club on the night, we’re really proud of her. And also to Edward in competing in his first 200 breaststroke and free, as it was his first time swimming both those races, aged nine.
And what can we do better in round two? He said:
It was a really good evening, and next time we want to make everything as tight as we can, while still swimming completely flat out…
The next round of the Winter League is on November 25th; your support is very welcome.
Thank you to everyone who joined in, provided the taxi service, or lost their voice shouting, not to mention the “guest” swimmers, or those who handed out the liquorice sweets to the parents.
